Heshko Ivan Tarasovich

Merited Master of Sports of Ukraine in athletics, European and World champion on the 1500 m. Ivan was a participant at the Olympic Games in Sydney and Athens.

Represents Kitcman, Chernivtsy, sport society «Dynamo» and «Biola» club. Coach – an honoured worker of physical training and sports of Ukraine Georgy Mironyuk. The official partner (from April 2006) – Hotel-Tourist Complex «Bukovina» (manager – Valeriy Chinush).

From year 2006 – the deputy of Chernivtsy town council.

Was born on August, 19th, 1979 in village Klivodin (Kitcman region of Chernivtsy oblast).

Heshko graduated from Kitcman secondary school, Higher republican school of Olympic reserve, and the physical training faculty of Kamenets-Podolsky state pedagogical university. Since 2006, Heshko is a candidate in this university. Since 2004, has been studying in Chernivtsy trade and economic institute KNTEU.

Ivan went in for sports in 5th grade in Kitcman children’s and juvenile sports school. The first year was in football section. The next two years Ivan went into athletics and played football, along with handball. And from this moment he dedicated himself to athletics.

From the very beginning in athletics Heshko regularly won awards in regional competitions.

First major success on the national scene was his victory on the 3000 meters at the Youth games U-17 of 1995 year - 8.44,27.

First major success on the international scene was silver medal of the European championship U-23 of 2001 year on the 1500 meters.

Year 1997 – 5th place on European championship U-19 on the 1500 m.
Year 1998 - 11th place on world championship U-19 on the 1500 m (France).
Year 1997 - 5th place on cross-country race European championship U-19.
Year 1999 - 4th place on European championship U-19 on the 1500 m.
Year 2000 – made his debut on Olympic games in Sydney on the 1500 m.
Year 2001 - 2th place on European championship U-23 on the 1500 m.
Year 2003 – first among Western Europe representatives became prize-man on world championship on the 1500 m (Paris (France), 3rd place). Best sportsman of the year in Bukovina.
Year 2004 – won a silver medal at the indoor World Championship in Budapest (Hungary) on the 1500 m (he finished second and lost 0,03 sec to Paul Korir from Kenya). At the Olympic Games in Athens came fifth on the 1500 m (he started his finishing spurt too early to fight with El-Guerrouj and Lagat for a gold medal and got nothing). Won a Grand-Prix final in Monaco on the 1500 m. Best sportsman of the year in Bukovina.
Year 2005 – became a European champion indoors in Madrid (Spain) on the 1500 m (he was in the lead from the second lap and till finish line). Ivan took 4th place at the World Championship in Helsinki (Finland). For the second year in a row won Monaco Grand-Prix with a brilliant finishing spurt on a distance of 1500 m. Best sportsman of the year in Bukovina.
Year 2006 – won at the indoor World Championship in Moscow (Russia) on the 1500 m. Took the 1st place on the 1500 m and came 2nd on the 800 m at the European Cup in Malaga (Spain). Heshko was awarded with a special prize as the best European Cup athlete. With an incredible finishing spurt he won a «Golden League» stage in Paris on the 1500 m. At the European Championship in Goteborg (Sweden) was 2nd on the 1500 m. At the World Cup in Athens (Greece) Ivan Heshko won second place on the 1500 m, and as a member of European national team he won gold. In March and June of 2006 was acknowledged as the best sportsman of Ukraine. In January 14th 2007 on the "Athena" ceremony, he got an award as the best athlete of Ukraine of 2006. Best sportsman of the year in Bukovina.

Heshko fulfilled the Master of Sports’ standard in 1997, World-Class Athlete’s standard – in 2001. The title Merited Master of Sports was given to him in 26.04.2004.

21.09.2004 Ukrainian Security Service rewarded Heshko with "Valor Cross" (II degree)
At the end of 2005 year rewarded with medal "For labour and will to victory"
24.08.2006 rewarded with order "Bukovina"

In the beginning of 2004 Ivan got an accommodation in Chernivtsy (the order on two-room apartment was given to him during the show “Variety stars to sport stars”, Mayor of Chernivtsy presented it to him). Now he’s been constructing a house in Kitcman.

In 2005 together with Valeriy Chinush, the deputy of state duma of Chernivtsy, and Georgiy Mazurashu, the manager of regional sport agency, Heshko initiated and organized the Open Cup of Chernivtsy region on the 1 mile “Bukovinska milya”; in 2006, this Cup got an international status. In 2005 and 2006, he took the first place at those competitions. All the droit Ivan gave to the regional home of children.

Nicknames: «White danger of black mainland», «Ukrainian Ivan the Terrible».
